Lola’s Top 5 Episodes of The Twilight Zone

It’s a tradition for the SyFy channel to air a marathon of The Twilight Zone every New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. I thought, what better time to countdown my own favorite episodes of Rod Serling’s classic show. I imagine some may be surprised by my picks. Most of my favorite episodes fall into the psychological horror category, and they’re not necessarily the most popular of episodes. However, these are the ones that I believe are the most bone-chilling, the most unsettling. Bottom line, these are the episodes that give me the creeps. Enjoy!

5. The Hitch-Hiker

I love driving alone in the middle of nowhere. There’s this feeling that anything could happen at any time. It feels a little dangerous, and a tad thrilling. Add in a mysterious stranger lurking on the side of a desolate highway, and you’ve got yourself a situation that is ripe with horror potential. The Hitch-Hiker isn’t especially groundbreaking with its plot twist. However the setting and imagery is darkly poetic, and the lead character’s terror is palpable.

4. The Masks

I think I love this episode so much, because I just love masks. Masks fall into that wonderfully wacky territory of the uncanny. A mask is an expression of our inner selves. It’s us in the most wild, expressionist way. At the same time, masks are used to hide identity and shield the truth that’s beneath. All of this symbolism, is at the heart of this episode. Let’s just say our protagonist gets his revenge, in the best way possible.

3.  Perchance to Dream

Dreams are one of the most bizarre, confusing parts of life. There’s so much that we don’t know yet about dreams, so it makes sense that The Twilight Zone would want to tackle this topic. In Perchance to Dream, a horrified man is driven to seek therapy, after a series of dreams in which a beautiful woman is trying to kill him. Unfortunately for him, his dreams are bleeding over into his waking life. This is a super surreal episode, complete with a scene at a carnival. Picture Freddy Krueger as a sexy lady, and you’ve got Perchance to Dream.

2. The After Hours

I like The After Hours so much that I based my short film, Plastic Bodies on it. There’s something undeniably frightening about mannequins. Mannequins are human, yet not human. They are crude representations of us composed of hollow artificial materials, and disguised in the latest fashions. Now imagine these uncanny monsters were after you. Imagine, that the world as you know it, is not the true reality. That’s what our heroine is up against. This is a theme that The Twilight Zone covered many times, but never with as much finesse as in The After Hours.

1. Mirror Image

I’ve always had a fascination with dopplegangers. There’s something petrifying about the notion that there’s a sinister double of you wandering around. When I was a child, I had a dream about my doppleganger, and it still freaks me out today. In Mirror Image, the protagonist must come to terms with the possibility that she has a look-alike wandering around, or she’s losing her grip on reality. Perhaps the worst enemy you can have, is yourself?

Lola’s Creepy Christmas Countdown- Part 2

7788965_orig.jpg

(I do not own any of the images featured.)

Alright guys, it’s round 2 of my Creepy Christmas Countdown! We’ve reached the top five, and there’s no turning back. Please let me know in the comments or on Twitter what your favorite films of the holiday season are.

maxresdefault.jpg

5. Dead End

There are so many reasons to love this movie. From the flesh eating lady in white to the severe psychotic breakdowns, Dead End is the gift that keeps on giving. Dead End follows a family on their way to a holiday gathering. They become lost, and all hell breaks loose as they face their deep-rooted resentments and the evils that lurk in the surrounding forest. You thought your family holidays were hell, just wait until you see what these people end up going through.

dead-of-night-3

4. Dead of Night- Christmas Party

Dead of Night is one of my all time favorite films. Unfortunately it’s a little tricky to find. I used to have it on dvd, but then I got in a car accident and someone stole my movie case from my car. It’s a long story. Car crashes and theft aside, Dead of Night is well worth seeking out. The Christmas portion of the anthology film is the nightmarish tale of a young girl who attends a party at an old mansion. While playing hide and seek, she ends up finding a young boy who wants her to stay and care for him forever. Like the rest of the film, Christmas Party is understated and provides a lurking dread that is like the falling snow, light but constant.

gremlins-gizmo

3. Gremlins

I don’t like to judge the tastes of others, but if you don’t enjoy Gremlins than you’re just a big Scrooge. Gremlins takes the third spot on my list for its originality, its charm, and for the adorable Gizmo. Although it’s a film that can and should be enjoyed by the whole family, in my book it’s still a horror movie. If you have doubts, just watch that scene where Gizmo first starts spawning furry little demons. If that doesn’t constitute as body horror, then I don’t know what does. As a final word of warning, if you’re planning on getting anyone a gremlin this Christmas, I’d recommend you thoroughly go through all the rules.

960.jpg

2. Black Christmas

It’s weird to think that Bob Clark directed Black Christmas and A Christmas Story. I guess he had a lot of Christmas to get out of his system. Black Christmas is one of the few slashers where the killer is never fully identified. This makes the film terrifying on a whole different level. My favorite part of watching Black Christmas is trying to discern WTF is going on in those weird phone calls. To this day when the phone rings, I still worry that the call is coming from inside the house.

nightmare_before_christmas_quiz_result_04

1. The Nightmare Before Christmas

For my top favorite creepy Christmas film, I’m going full on cliche. It may be the obvious choice, but that doesn’t make The Nightmare Before Christmas any less brilliant. This movie has everything! It’s got glorious stop-motion, a touching love story, life lessons, and best of all both Christmas and Halloween.

Lola’s Creepy Christmas Countdown- Part 1

It’s that time of year again, folks. Yes, the time of year where shoppers lose their minds, families are forced to bond against their will, and everyone feels the acute sting of loneliness. All joking aside, Christmas is a blast! One of my favorite ways of celebrating is to pull out my favorite spooky Christmas films and TV episodes. I’ve always felt that these little pearls of holiday gore are rare and hard to come by. However, the more I’ve thought about it, the more I’ve realized that there’s actually quite the selection available. So today, I present part 1 of my top 10 creepy tales of Christmas, wrapped in human flesh and topped with a bow. Enjoy!

4-the-children

10. The Children

I’m going to be honest, I don’t like kids. I don’t like them at all. I didn’t even like kids when I was one. That’s why The Children has so much appeal for me. The Children follows a family on Christmas vacation that becomes the prey of their own rabid offspring. These little shits are vicious, and the result is a delightful bloodbath.

500full

9. Wind Chill

I love a good stuck on the road film. Car travel lends itself well to horror. In Wind Chill, two young college students are forced to battle the elements, each other, and the supernatural. This film stars Emily Blunt before she exploded into Hollywood stardom. The Christmas aspect of the movie is relegated to the background, but the winter atmosphere is front and center. The supernatural mystery is compelling, but the real star of Wind Chill is the relationship between the two main characters.

krampusheadera_500_281_81_s_c1

8. Krampus

If I were to crown a king of holiday horror, it’d be Michael Dougherty. With Krampus, Dougherty takes the humor of Christmas Vacation and gives it a macabre makeover. Fans of horror, have been waiting a long time to see the legend of Krampus come to life on the big screen and Dougherty doesn’t disappoint. The creature design is spot on. From the toys, to the elves, to of course Krampus, it’s clear that there was a good deal of consideration put in to creating a world that could stand on its own. The humans that populate this realm manage to hold their own as well. My favorite performances come from David Koechner and Conchata Ferrell. If you’re looking for a horror film that completely embodies the spirit of the season, look no further.

1355_1166

7. Tales From the Crypt- And All Through the House

Before the HBO TV series, Tales From the Crypt was adapted into one hell of a movie. The 1972 film opens with “And All Through the House“, the tale of a woman who murders her husband and becomes the target of a homicidal Santa. This story was later used on the show, but I prefer the film version. The story itself is way wacky. The show takes the over the top script in the expected humorous direction, and the result is fun and strange. However it can’t compare to the solemn approach of the movie. The serious nature of the the film version, creates a startling surrealistic contrast between the story and the overall vibe. This is what makes and “All Through the House” so downright freaky. My advice, don’t pick Christmas to murder your spouse.

how-the-ghosts-stole-xmas

6. The X-Files – How the Ghosts Stole Christmas

As much as I love The X-Files, it’s easy to become annoyed with Mulder and Scully. They’re two characters that are flawed to the core, and that’s what makes them seem so human, so real. Still, there’s a lot of stuff I always wanted to rip them each a new asshole over. Well that’s exactly what happens in the season 6 episode “How the Ghosts Stole Christmas“. Over the course of the episode, Mulder and Scully become trapped on Christmas Eve inside a haunted house. There they meet two annoying ghosts played by Lily Tomlin and Ed Asner. These ghosts psychoanalyze the partners exposing their shortcomings and doubts. The episode features a fantastic set and some seriously witty dialogue. To this day, I still use the phrase “paramasturbatory”.

Knott’s Scary Farm Sets Sights On Halloween

Halloween and haunt enthusiasts were treated to quite a few surprises over the last few weeks as Knott’s Scary Farm made back to back appearances at both Midsummer Scream and ScareLA Halloween to announce some of what they have planned for this upcoming Halloween Season.

First appearing at the inaugural Midsummer Scream Halloween Festival in Long Beach, California, Knott’s gave fans a brief history of audio mechanics for the mazes before making a few major announcements.

The first announcement  was met with many cheers as they announced last year’s Paranormal Inc. maze would be returning to Knott’s for 2016. When asked if the story or maze would be different, Knott’s representatives stated that only a few tweaks were made to create a better experience.

The second major announcement from Knott’s  concerned the Skeleton Key rooms. With the growing interest in escape rooms, Knott’s has decided that the Skeleton Key rooms for 2016 would consist of an escape room element. The rooms are: Visions, Zozo, Slasher, and Prey.

These new additions to the Skeleton Key rooms definitely add a new factor of terror and excitement to an already incredible event.

The news from Knott’s didn’t end at Midsummer Scream. The following weekend at ScareLA, Knott’s continued the show. The panel at ScareLA started off as a history of Knott’s and Halloween, where they explained the evolution of Knott’s Scary Farm.

They began to speak of the many celebrity hosts of Knott’s Scary Farm, when the official ScareLA host, Elvira, crashed their panel. Elvira announced that she would be returning to Knott’s Scary Farm this year with a new show!

The announcements didn’t end there as they announced that the popular laser tag and paint ball inspired Infected: Special Ops will be replaced this year with an updated version called Infected: Black Ops.

This new version of Infected will introduce a whole new style to the game as it will be in a new area of the park. It will also have a standard queue system instead of special times, new terrain to cover, unlimited ammo, and a whole new boss at the end.

Knott’s plans to announce the remainder of their mazes and shows for this year at a special Knott’s pass holders event on August 25th.

Between the announcements made at Midsummer Scream, ScareLA, and the few made online, Knott’s is shaping up to be the main event for this Halloween season.

Be sure to follow All Hallows’ Haunts here on our site or on Twitter- @HallowsHaunts for more information on Knott’s Scary Farm and other Halloween, horror, and haunt events in Southern California.

Lola’s Favorite Finds From ScareLA and Midsummer Scream

I haven’t talked much about fashion on this site. I used to write about it more on my Buzzfeed account. When I started doing AHH, I just sort of stopped. Fashion is a big part of my life, and it’s probably the thing that gets me noticed more than anything else. On that note, many of my coworkers have been asking me where I get a lot of my stuff. Therefore I’m dedicating this article to all my friends at work, and all my fellow goth girls. I’ve indicated which convention I purchased each item at, but most of these vendors were at both events.

(From ScareLA) As much as I don’t need another black t-shirt, I couldn’t resist. This cute little black tee by Akumu Ink reminds me of The Conjuring by way of Tim Burton. I’m a sucker for illustrations of pale girls with big eyes. Akumu Ink has a wide range of designs to choose from. The designs are printed on hoodies, men’s and women’s tees, and even backpacks. If you like creepy cute, then Akumu Ink is definitely a brand you should look in to. http://akumuink.com/

cz3JKSz6SquiHnMRRrO7_8TW04b_1024x1024(From ScareLA) By far and away my favorite find from both conventions, is this amazing Jack o’ lantern purse by Dulce Calaveritas. I tried to get one at Midsummer Scream, but by the time I’d made up my mind, they were sold out. My purse is a little different than the one in the picture. My pumpkin is lime green with purple features and a black strap. They come in all colors. I like this bag, because it’s big, so there’s plenty of room. I also like the way the vinyl glitters in the sunlight. If you’re looking to score one of these, you’ll have to be patient. They sell out super fast, so it’s kind of hit and miss. https://www.etsy.com/shop/Dulcecalaveritas

922fdadf5b12dc5a553b00ecfd853402-1

(Midsummer Scream) I picked up not one, but three items from Madame Whiskers. I got an eyeball ring, a Morticia Addams ring, and a Mulder and Scully pendant. You can get almost any image on you’re jewelry. They’re also inexpensive, which is great for goth girls on a budget! https://www.etsy.com/shop/MadameWhiskers#items

(Midsummer Scream) I love a nice sweater, and what hoodie could be better for Lola Tarantula than this spiderweb zip up from Kreepsville 666? Kreepsville 666 is a staple at horror conventions. They offer everything from Elvira dresses to skull shaped handbags. There’s something for every creepy girl! http://store.kreepsville666.com/

GBJSWW_1024x1024

(ScareLA) I absolutely adore these Halloween/horror skirts, designed by Brittnee Braun. My skirt is actually a different pattern than the one in the picture, but they’re quite similar. She sells a huge variety of prints, so there are many options to choose from. The classic high waisted shape will look good on most girls. I like this skirt because it creates the illusion of an hourglass figure. If I were to get another one I’d probably go for one of the zombie prints. https://www.etsy.com/shop/SkirtyBirt?ref=condensed_trust_header_title_items http://www.brittneebraun.com/

il_570xN.1004055262_a8ty

The last vendor I’m going to mention is Sweet Midnight. I didn’t buy anything from her this time, but I’ve invested in some wicked cool stuff in the past. Sweet Midnight’s most popular item is the coffin shaped purse. These purses can be bought with or without bat wings. Word of warning, don’t ever put your coffin in the washing machine. Let’s just say mine is no longer coffin shaped. http://www.sweetmidnight.com/

Creepiest Pokemon Countdown

With the recent popularity of Pokemon Go, I thought I’d take this opportunity to express my own love of Pokemon. I grew up with Pokemon, so these weird little creatures will always hold a special place in my heart. While all Pokemon are kind of strange, some are definitely weirder than others. With that being said, today I’ll be counting down the creepiest, most bizarre of the batch. For the purposes of this article, I’ll only be focusing on the original 151. Alright, let’s get started!

20130310035513!Ash_Primeape

10. Primeape is very much a Planet of the Apes type Pokemon. Primeapes have nasty tempers and are prone to violent outbursts. Once you’ve angered a Primeape, there is no escaping it.

250px-Ash_Muk.png

9. Muk is exactly what his name implies, he’s a pile of poisonous goo. Though Muk is mostly a benevolent creature, he has a tendency to contaminate everything he touches. His essence can kill plants, cause Pokemon and humans to become sick, and even pollute entire lakes. Muk can be found in your typical dirty alley, sewer, or garbage can.

e7d95270-300a-0134-0af4-0629623c6db9

8. Gyarados is modeled after the mythological dragons of ancient China. How a wimpy Magikarp evolves into such a majestic and powerful creature is beyond me. Apparently, in China, it was believed that a carp could transform into a dragon by swimming upstream. Gyarados are easily angered and have a tendency to cause Godzilla level destruction. Gyarados have burned entire villages to the ground. It’s safe to say that pissing off one of these water dragons is a bad move.

1759176-lorelei_slowbro

7. Slowbro is the evolved form of Slowpoke. Slowbro is actually two Pokemon combined into one. This is where the creepy part comes in. A Slowbro is a Slowpoke that has a Shellder attached to its tail. The Shellder bites down on the Slowpoke’s tail, latching on to it. The Shellder releases toxins into the Slowbro which eliminate the pain of the bite. Though this evolution is mutually beneficial, that doesn’t change the fact that Slowpoke has to go through life with a giant poisonous crustacean biting its ass.

1757859-james_and_victreebel

6. Victreebel reminds me a lot of Little Shop of Horrors. This carnivorous plant uses a soothing waving motion of the vine on its head, and emits a sweet smell to lure in small animals and Pokemon. Then it shatters the false sense of security by swallowing its victims whole. Victreebel are thought to live in hordes in the depths of the jungle. Many have gone searching for them, but none have returned. Also, keep in mind, these things are as tall as a human! I’m definitely getting a vibe similar to The Ruins from this Pokemon.

Red_Gengar_PO

5. Gengar is one of the coolest Pokemon in existence. He is the most evolved of all the ghost types. He is able to take the form of an object or person’s shadow, allowing him to hide in plain sight. Like a real ghost, Gengar’s presence causes the temperature to plummet. He is known for terrorizing lost travelers and taking pleasure in the fear of its victims.

Giselle's_Cubone

4. Cubone is jokingly referred to as the Norman Bates of Pokemon. The skull that Cubone wears over his face is thought to be the skull of its dead mother. When the full moon is out, Cubone cries, because the moon reminds him of his mother’s face. The crying reverberates through the skull, coming out as a strange cry unique to Cubone. I have to wonder if maybe Cubone killed his mother himself. Maybe they could make a separate Pokemon type called serial killer. His cute appearance is a front, don’t be deceived.

Harrison_Hypno_Hypnosis

3. Hypno is one of many psychic pokemon that uses hypnosis. Hypno is known for carrying a pendulum and munching on the dreams of others. It particularly enjoys eating the dreams of children. According to Wikipedia, Hypno once hypnotized and kidnapped a child. It’s believed that Hypno never sleeps. Hypno’s base form, Drowzee is said to suck people’s dreams out through their nostrils. Hypno and Drowzee are based off of the mythological Baku, a chimera that devours nightmares. The Baku is made up of an elephant’s trunk, an ox tail, rhinoceros eyes, and tiger paws.

season2_ep9_ss2

2. Mr. Mime doesn’t really have an interesting backstory, he’s quite simply a mime. Being a mime is enough in my book to land him on this list. According to the Pokedex, Mr. Mimes begin as Mime Juniors. They are born with the ability to mime and they evolve from copying the mannerisms of other Pokemon. Mr. Mimes seem to take on human jobs like cooking and housekeeping. In the show, a Mr. Mime lives with Ash’s family and takes care of household chores. I quite like Mr. Mime, he’s so benevolently creepy.

Erica_Jynx

1. Jynx may look like a drag queen, but she’s actually based off of popular Japanese Yokai lore. Jynx is said to have derived her appearance from Yuki-onna and Yamauba. Yuki-onna is a pale white ghost woman with long black hair. She appears only in winter or during snow storms. She is often thought of as a malevolent entity that causes humans to freeze to death. Those who have read Kwaiden or seen a film version will recall a particularly chilling story about Yuki-onna. She also shows up in Kurosawa’s film, Dreams. Yamauba is a crone like creature, that is said to feast on children. Legend states that she phas an extra mouth on the top of her head hidden beneath her hair. Now Jynx isn’t as vicious as her mythological ancestors. Her method of attack usually involves kissing her enemy into submission. Still, though, would you want to be kissed by this weird Pokemon lady?

pokemon.jpg

There you have it folks, my top ten creepiest Pokemon. Throughout the writing of this list, I think I’ve realized that the more anthropomorphic a Pokemon looks, the creepier it is.Which Pokemon do you think is the creepiest? Let me know on Twitter, Facebook, or in the comments below.

Nina Forever-A Blood Spattered Romance

551336298_640-1

Nina Forever is a macabre romance about what happens when old loves and old memories refuse to die. The film follows in the footsteps of other recent zombie love stories like Life After Beth and Burying the Ex. Unlike those films, Nina Forever is not a fun romantic comedy. It is a profound and painful journey through a relationship that is doomed to fail.

The film follows Holly, a young woman with an attraction to death. Her morbid fascination causes her to fall for Rob, a formerly suicidal man who is still grieving for his dead ex, Nina. Their relationship is great at first. However, when they hit the sheets, Nina comes between them… literally. In a grotesque scene worthy of David Cronenberg, Nina somehow grows like a plant from the bed. Of course Holly and Rob are stunned and terrified. Nina wastes no time accusing Rob of cheating on her. She then proceeds to berate Holly. Rob unsure of what to do, ends up doing nothing. His inaction results in Holly dashing out in anger. The next morning she returns prepared to tackle their little “Nina” situation.

The pair spend the rest of the film attempting to negotiate their relationship around Nina. First, Holly tries to make Nina part of their life together. She does this by getting Nina’s name tattooed on her and by including Nina in their sexual escapades. When that doesn’t work, they try ignoring her. Finally they try making peace with Nina’s death, but the presence of Nina is inescapable. Ultimately, Holly ends up being the one stuck with Nina, forever ending her relationship with Rob.

75080___Selected

It’s hard to say for sure what exactly the message is behind Nina Forever, but a few things are clear. Nina represents the past that the characters can’t move on from. In Holly’s case, Nina represents an obsession with darkness. Nina herself insists throughout the movie that she doesn’t want to keep coming back. She wishes to remain dead. Nina’s existence ranges from painful to numb. The film doesn’t provide any clear cut answers, but it does raise some excellent questions. Do the living drag on the memory of the dead for our own benefit, rather than theirs? Can a person overcome their past, or will it always just keep popping up like Nina?

The actors are all superb. Cian Barry plays the brooding Rob well. His is not the most exciting role in the film, but his personality gives it a bit more edge than it might have otherwise. Barry has smoking hot chemistry with his co-star Abigail Hardingham who plays Holly. Hardingham stands out as the vulnerable young woman with many layers. She shines in every scene she’s in. Don’t be surprised if she starts showing up in more and more indie films. Finally, there’s Fiona O’Shaughnessy as Nina. With her captivating features, and unique voice O’Shaughnessy is the perfect Nina. She provides witty banter, all while being sexy in the most creepy way possible.

NinaF3

Another major score for Nina Forever is the music. “Nina” features music from indie rockers like Amanda Palmer and Minnesota band The Ladybrugs. The music contributes to the hip vibe of the overall film. It adds a layer of fun, to an otherwise sad movie.

Nina Forever is a love story for those who prefer their romance blood soaked rather than sugar coated. While perhaps not entirely cohesive, this film by Chris Blaine and Ben Blaine has plenty to offer. At its best, Nina Forever is an examination of what it means to be alive and in love. While it is not a scary film, the blood, the undead girlfriend, and the general weirdness more than solidify its place in the horror genre. Fans of these mumblegore films should keep their eyes peeled for the next Blaine brothers project.

In The Night- A Poem

tumblr_m850e3SkwR1qkgthwo1_1280

Maiden White coiled in moonlight,

Death is always waiting,

By candle in the witching hour,

For her breath abating,

Hushed whispers down the corridor,

The ghosts just passing through,

Tears glitter in the dark,

Oh, turn another screw,

She calls the devils with her spell,

“Bring them onto me”,

Painted by shades of afterlife,

Screaming like a banshee,

Fingers move up the bed sheets,

This is silent revelation,

Feeding from the bone,

Whatʼs another violation?

They take it all,

Drank the milk straight from her breast,

And she prays to fall,

Against the safety of Abrahamʼs chest,

Breathe in, breathe out,

Dawn is just within her reach,

Unfathomable fathoms,

Slither back to the breach,

Closing the gates behind them,

Limbs rising from the bed,

Another night sheʼs lived through,

And many more to dread.
